As VP Engineering and Chief Architect at eBay, I lead the teams responsible for the developer experience for our 3500 developers. I also co-lead a Velocity initiative across the entire company to improve eBay’s software delivery outcomes, inspired directly by Continuous Delivery and the DORA / Accelerate research. eBay hosts a yearly internal developer conference, and every year brings an external speaker to inspire and encourage the organization. Because I have known Dave for years from conferences and the global DevOps community, and because of his excellent videos on the Continuous Delivery channel on Youtube, he was the obvious choice to deliver our external keynote in 2020. In his keynote, Dave outlined a scientific approach to software development. He discussed Test-Driven Development as a “talent accelerator” for teams, and Continuous Delivery as an enabler for improving software delivery outcomes. It was a huge inspiration and a valuable conceptual roadmap for eBay’s Velocity initiative.   We also continuously (!) point teams at Dave’s Continuous Delivery channel for the “why” behind improvements in build outcomes, branching practices, automated testing, deployment pipelines, etc.
